The Jérémiah saga takes place in America. The first stage of "
La Nuit des rapaces" briefly summarises the situation.

Towards the end of the 20th century, the world is turned upside down by the growth in racism. On one side there are the whites (WASP) and on the other side, the blacks (Black-Power), each side battling to impose their race at any price. This uncontrollable racist hatred soon breaks into a relentless civil war. This human madness is going to end up in a mad move. A gesture made by a man, whose ethnic origins we will never know, switches on the "red button" which sets off an atomic cloud explosion with the intent of restoring good terms in the world. This ultimate solution creates chaos in the American civilization, bringing it back over 300 years ago in time. This gesture doesn't leave many people alive ; only ten million in the whole of America.

With no structured civilization, the survivors try to recreate communities, to reconstruct a social system consisting of a mixture of human groups of different races and coming from different backgrounds. Similar problems to the past reappear and they sink back into a new sort of decadence. Gangs of looters spread terror in this universe where it is necessary to defend yourself against everything: nature, wild animals and especially against man. Hermann is inspired by the pioneers long ago in order to create a post-apocalyptic western governed only according to one law, that of only the strong survive.

Hermann's idea of creating Jérémiah began after the lecture Ravage, by Barjavel, which described the consequences of a nuclear war. Jérémiah is an American sort of story, a kind of crude poetry, containing no sensitivity as Hermann hates sob stories.
